Collagen and Biotin: What Can Brands Legally Say?

By Glow Nutrition1 min read

Who this is for: UK buyers and content reviewers checking collagen plus biotin supplement claims

Biotin and collagen do not have the same claims status

This is the key distinction. Biotin has authorised GB claims. Collagen does not.

That means a collagen plus biotin product may be able to say that biotin contributes to the maintenance of normal hair or normal skin, if the product provides enough biotin and follows the conditions of use. It should not turn that into "collagen supports hair".

The wording has to stay attached to biotin

Compliant wording is specific. It points to the nutrient doing the authorised thing.

Safer structure: contains biotin, which contributes to the maintenance of normal hair.

Riskier structure: collagen and biotin for hair growth.

The second version blurs the actor, adds a growth idea, and risks implying an unauthorised claim.

Normal hair is not hair growth

"Maintenance of normal hair" is narrower than many shoppers expect. It is not a promise of faster growth, thicker hair, reversal of shedding or treatment of hair loss.

That distinction matters because hair-loss searches often have medical or hormonal context. A supplement label should not overreach into treatment language.

Check the dose and the rest of your stack

If a collagen product includes biotin, check how much. Also check whether you already take biotin in a multivitamin, hair supplement or beauty blend.

More is not automatically better, and high-dose biotin can be relevant to lab-test interpretation. Ask a clinician if you are due blood tests or take regular medication.

Claims and safety note

Collagen has no authorised health claim in Great Britain for hair, skin, nails, joints, wrinkles, hydration or ageing. Biotin has authorised claims for normal hair, normal skin and normal mucous membranes only where the product meets the required conditions.

Hair loss, sudden shedding, scalp symptoms or post-treatment hair changes should be discussed with a clinician. Do not use a collagen and biotin label as medical guidance.

For the broader collagen claim position, read Collagen Claims UK. For vitamin C, read Vitamin C and Collagen Formation.

Frequently asked questions

Can brands say biotin supports hair?
Biotin has an authorised claim that it contributes to the maintenance of normal hair, provided the product meets the conditions of use.
Can brands say collagen supports hair?
Collagen does not have an authorised GB health claim for hair. Brands should not transfer biotin's authorised claim to collagen.
Is collagen plus biotin better than collagen alone?
Not automatically. The combination may allow authorised nutrient claims for biotin, but it does not prove the finished product produces visible results.
