Collagen and Zinc: Skin, Hair and Nail Claims in Plain English

Who this is for: UK buyers and content reviewers checking collagen plus zinc beauty supplement claims

Zinc has the claim collagen shoppers often expect

Zinc is one of the cleaner claim routes in beauty supplements. It has authorised claims for the maintenance of normal skin, normal hair and normal nails.

Collagen does not. That distinction matters when a product combines the two.

The claim must stay attached to zinc

The compliant logic is narrow: the product contains zinc, and zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal skin, hair or nails, if the product provides enough zinc and follows the conditions of use.

The claim should not become "collagen supports nails" or "collagen and zinc strengthen hair." Those versions blur the substantiated nutrient and risk overclaiming.

Normal maintenance is not transformation

"Maintenance of normal" is careful wording. It does not mean faster hair growth, longer nails, wrinkle reduction, reversal of shedding or treatment of brittle nails.

That may feel less exciting than marketing copy, but it is the legally safer interpretation.

Check total zinc intake

More zinc is not automatically better. If you take a multivitamin, immune supplement, hair supplement or high-dose mineral product, check your total daily zinc intake.

This is especially relevant when a collagen product is part of a wider beauty stack.

Claims and safety note

Collagen has no authorised health claim in Great Britain for skin, hair, nails, joints, wrinkles, hydration or ageing. Zinc claims must use authorised wording and meet conditions of use.

If you have hair loss, skin symptoms, nail changes, pregnancy, breastfeeding, a medical condition or use regular medication, ask a clinician or pharmacist before relying on supplements.

Frequently asked questions

Can zinc claims mention skin, hair and nails?
Yes, zinc has authorised claims for the maintenance of normal skin, normal hair and normal nails, provided conditions of use are met.
Can collagen make the same claims as zinc?
No. Collagen does not have authorised GB health claims for skin, hair or nails.
Is collagen with zinc better than collagen alone?
Not automatically. It may allow authorised zinc claims, but that does not prove the finished product creates visible results.
