Vegan Collagen vs Real Collagen: Label Differences

Two products can share a name and share almost nothing else

Search "collagen" on any UK retailer and two very different kinds of product answer the same query. Marine and bovine collagen products contain hydrolysed collagen peptides — a real animal-derived protein, extracted and broken down from fish skin, cow hide or similar sources. Products sold as "vegan collagen" contain none of that, because no plant produces the collagen protein structure. There is currently no commercially available plant-derived collagen protein equivalent to animal collagen peptides.

That is not a small labelling quirk. It means the word "collagen" is doing two different jobs depending on which shelf you are standing in front of, and most shoppers are never told which job it is doing on the product in their hand.

What "vegan collagen" products actually contain

In the UK market, products marketed as vegan collagen are collagen-support formulas: blends of nutrients positioned around the body's own collagen production or general beauty support, rather than collagen protein itself. Live UK listings in this category typically combine several of the following: vitamin C, zinc, biotin, hyaluronic acid, amino acids such as lysine, and sometimes botanical extracts. One current UK listing, for example, is built around hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, vitamin C, resveratrol, zinc and a "superfood complex" — nutrients and plant extracts, not a collagen protein. A separate vegan collagen gummy line follows the same pattern: vitamin C, BCAAs and hyaluronic acid, again with no collagen protein ingredient in the formulation.

That is a legitimate product category. The question worth asking is not whether it is a scam, but whether the label is honest about what it is: does this product contain collagen, or is it a formula that supports the processes your body already uses to make collagen?

The label point is sharp, and it explains the whole category

The reason vegan collagen products are built the way they are is not accidental. Vitamin C has a genuine, recognised benefit: it supports your body's normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin. That benefit is real, standard and specific — but it belongs to vitamin C, not to a finished "vegan collagen" product, and not to collagen as an ingredient category generally, because collagen on its own isn't a proven fix at all.

This is precisely why the category exists in its current form. A product cannot put plant-derived collagen protein in a capsule, because it does not exist at scale. It can put vitamin C in a capsule in a meaningful amount and describe, accurately, what vitamin C contributes to. Reading the label without disparaging the choice

The issue is purely one of naming clarity: a shopper who wants an animal-free alternative to collagen peptides deserves to know that no such direct plant equivalent currently exists at scale, and a shopper who wants a vitamin C or zinc supplement with a real, recognised benefit around collagen formation deserves to know that is what they are actually buying.

The practical check is simple. Read past the product name to the ingredients panel. If "collagen" appears only in the title and marketing copy, and the ingredients list is built from vitamins, minerals and plant extracts, you are looking at a collagen-support formula. If hydrolysed collagen peptides appear as a named ingredient with a stated source and dose, you are looking at collagen itself — and at that point, the marine-vs-bovine sourcing question, not the vegan question, becomes the relevant comparison.

What to keep in mind
